How would you cultivate a deeper relationship with the community you’d like to serve?

In my volunteer role as president of our neighborhood association, I am working to create greater community connection between the resources available with our community members and building links among our tremendous wealth of nonprofits including HandsOn Bay Area, Rebuilding Together SF, PAWS, SF School Volunteers. As I work to build these connections, I am overwhelmed at the digital divide which exists in our neighborhood as we have more than 40% of our community members who do not use online technology and this trend of using tech is only increasing. Therefore this segment of our community becomes harder and harder to reach. The deeper relationship that we would like to have is to be able to effectively and efficiently communicate and support everyone. Creating greater community cohesion and supports for everyone in our community. If we can do this effectively, we can be a model for others as well and would happily share our best practices across the nation.

How would you use the $1,000 to turn your idea into a reality?

In order to effectively communicate with an entire community, we need to develop an integrated system of outreach including community bulletin boards in frequented places, a network of connections where neighbors on line serve as connections to those who are not as well as translation of materials into Spanish and Cantonese.

We would also like to engage young people of the neighborhood to be a part of this communication system as they are most up to date in their use of technology and will instill the ethic of service at an early age.

$1000 would cover the costs of materials/bulletin boards, translation, small stipends for youth, postage and food costs for town hall sessions to learn from our non-tech community members.
