How would you cultivate a deeper relationship with the community you’d like to serve?

Amelia's Wings is an organization founded to provide people with transportation and lodging who need to travel in order to receive medical care. We are a national organization, and have helped patients travel to the St. Louis Children's hospital in Missouri and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Because we are new,and just getting started, we don't have the fundamental relationships in place to connect people who NEED help with people who CAN help. That's where you come in! We are ready to expand, and need help making those connections. We plan to build face-to-face relationships with hospitals throughout the country, starting in Jackson, MS. By hosting a meet and greet with patient coordinators, nurses, and doctors, we can educate the medical community about the services we provide and start making those critical connections.

How would you use the $1,000 to turn your idea into a reality?

We will use $1,000 to fund the first meet and greet session in Jackson, MS. A small portion of the funds will be used to print fliers and business cards that medical professionals can take away with them. The bulk of the funds will be earmarked for patient use – for use in securing hotel rooms, plane tickets, or train tickets for patients and their families who are referred to the hosting medical facility. This will also serve as a proof of concept model. If the referral rate is significant as a result of this session, we will duplicate it and expand to other facilities in the area.

Our budget will be:
$100 Meet and Greet event (food and promotion)
$100 Fliers/Patient Cards
$800 Transportation Fund for sponsoring hospital

Great idea and most necessary as insurance doesn't cover travel costs, even for patients much less their companions.

This is a critical need. Families have maxed out credit cards for meals, lodging, and transportation to be near their loved ones. Then there are those who do not receive the medical care they need due to lack of resources to travel to medical centers. This is a very worthwhile endeavor... Hope you win Amelia!

Thank you very much!! Illness can be stressful enough without the added expense of travel, so we really want to help ease that stress! We appreciate your vote and comment!

As a brain tumor patient I traveled many times to another state for treatment. Travel, hotels, and gas are all expensive and when you are sick and need someone with you the expense is even higher. This is a wonderful idea and I wish you the best.

Did you know... an $800 transportation fund could easily fund a hotel for a child's family for a week while he's receiving treatment? Amelia's Wings helped provide a hotel for a young man's mom so she could get a good night's sleep while her son had brain surgery. Before that, she was sleeping (when she could) on a chair in her son's hospital room!
