Launched in June 2011 in the Bronx, New York City, Art and Resistance Through Education (ARTE) empowers and fosters leadership among traditionally disadvantaged young people by equipping them with human rights literacy and life skills through volunteer hip-hop mural projects. Moving forward, ARTE hopes to expand their work in another community, the local Boston area. Much of ARTE’s work revolves around connecting community partners together in order to create both lasting human rights education for young people and an important piece of community art. As part of this mural development process, young people are given a chance to learn about important human rights issues and choose an issue that most resonates with them. Through the energy, talents, and resources of local human rights organizations and community artists, young people within the Boston community will be able to develop as human rights leaders by using the urban artform of graffiti muralism.
$1,000 will help support these efforts by providing educational materials, paint and art materials, artist stipends, food, and other supplies. Most importantly, it is an opportunity to connect Boston community members with one another in a unique and tangible way, united to address human rights violations on a global level, but also those affecting their own neighborhood.
