How would you cultivate a deeper relationship with the community you’d like to serve?

Anyone who has ever traveled through the southeastern town of Savannah, Georgia would be able to attest to homelessness being far too prevalent on the the streets of this historic city. Many of us in society have unfortunately been trained to ignore this population, turning a blind and apathetic eye as we pass them by. Possibly even more unfortunate is that those of us who care to help get stuck in having no idea how to go about it. This community of homeless folks in Savannah is the exact community we plan to cultivate relationships and community with. To do this, we'll use the simple medium of providing food, water, conversation, and also clothes and other necessities to those who need it most. We've already found this to be a holistic and helpful way to form relationships with a community that's worthy to be cared for, and we look forward to furthering this work in the future.

How would you use the $1,000 to turn your idea into a reality?

With Feed Jesus, relationship and loving community are foundational. If we were to win this $1,000, our capacity for cultivating relationships would expand beyond our imagination. Essentially, this money would be used to purchase the food and beverages and other necessities that fill our backpacks as we hit the streets of Savannah. Currently, our efforts here and elsewhere have been funded out of pocket. With this grant, the amount of people enabled to live and love with us amongst the homeless for an afternoon and the amount of time and frequency spent on the streets would be enormously increased. Numerous rich and loving relationships will be formed amongst both those seeking to help and us with our homeless friends of Savannah, Georgia.

Hey Shannon! I see where you're coming from. I think it's safe to say that we're all about loving and serving everyone, and that everyone at some point becomes "the least of these", as you said. Right now, we would just be using this grant money if we received it to continue trying to help and love Savannah's homeless, and not because others don't deserve love and compassion as well. That's awesome that you're church also is turning words into action! By saying we don't want to evangelize, we just mean that we don't want to love with an agenda to get people to be more like us or something, or believe in Jesus. In our region, we unfortunately have experience with churches that seem to serve only with the hidden intention to tell people about Jesus, or to try to rope someone into coming to their church or being a Christian. This is what we're trying to work past. Also, we want to keep our work inclusive, in that Christians, non-Christians, atheists, other faiths, etc., can come together to acknowledge the value of their fellow human and in loving and taking care of each other. We're not opposed to working with churches. I guess we're just hesitant that the things described above would happen if we only worked with the support of church congregations. However, since this campaign has started, a college ministry that shares our vision has shown interest in hitting the streets with us, so that's close to working with a church I think, haha. Hope this helped, and thanks for your comment. Comment back if you have any other thoughts! Love, Zach.

"What you do to the least of these, you also do to Me." I think most of us will become 'the least of these' at some point. We all get old, we all get sick or lonely sometimes, we'll all go through something that will require compassion and support from others...it's not just the 'obvious'. Frankly, I think you *are* evangelizing by *demonstrating* Jesus' instructions and taking them beyond words on a page. My church does a lot of food drives...is it possible that you all might work with a church to use offerings to pay for the things you give or to distribute goods that are collected from the congregation?
